Why should we negotiate?

We live in a civilised society where the use of physical force is not acceptable to get what we want. So we need to convince other person(s) to give us what we want. However, they may not be ready to give us what we want unless they get what they want.

Negotiation is a process by making the other person ready to give us what we want where they also satisfy their need(s). For this to happen, both parties must have something that the other party needs. For example, I am selling a Product or service which someone needs and they have money which I need (or it could be vice versa). But the amount of money they are willing to give may be less than my offer price or the service they want may be more than what I am offering. Through Negotiation, we both try to come to an agreement where we both feel that what we are getting is a good value for what we are getting.

Most people don’t like Negotiation as they feel that it is a Win-Lose situation. However, our whole focus is on Mutual Benefit Negotiation.

If we come to an agreement, it is called Successful Negotiation and if we are unable to come to an agreement, it is called Unsuccessful Negotiation. In other words, Negotiation is a conversation which can lead to an agreement.

The ability to negotiate is a skill which everyone should have. With the ability to negotiate you can take charge of your life, your finances and your destiny. Many people feel that some people are simply born with the skill to negotiate, but the Truth is that everyone can learn this wonderful skill.
